$25 BILLION in Emergency Rental Assistance is Available – Learn How to Qualify

The pandemic has been a financial nightmare for millions of Americans. If you need help with rent because of the effects of the pandemic, you may qualify for the Emergency Rental Assistance Program in your state.

The federal government has set aside nearly $25 billion in funding for this program, which it sends directly to states, U.S. territories and tribes.

To qualify for emergency rental assistance through this program, you or someone in your household must meet the following criteria:

  • Someone is qualified for or receiving unemployment benefits, or has experienced a significant decrease in their income or a severe financial hardship due to COVID-19; AND
  • Someone is at risk of homelessness or housing instability; AND
  • Someone has a total income at or below 80% of the area’s median income.

Depending on your situation, you may even receive priority for assistance. For example, if you need help with rent because you have been unemployed for 90 days prior to applying, you may get rental relief before other applicants. You may also be prioritized if your household income is considered extremely low – at or below 50% of the area’s median income.

If you qualify, you can receive rental assistance for up to 12 months. Some local governments may extend this period by up to three months in some situations. Ready to apply? You can apply to this program directly with your state, territory or tribe.
