Although the most well-known sources of rental assistance and utility bill payment are government programs like Section 8 or LIHEAP. But, for some, federal and local government agencies may not be the best option. Luckily, there are also non-profit organizations and charities that give people grants to help with these kinds of costs. In other words, charities may be able to help pay for your rent and utility bills.
Programs like Section 8 housing can have very long waitlists, and oftentimes the lowest-income applicants or the applicants most in need will be prioritized over others. However, that does not mean that if you are on the waitlist, you are not in need. Many waitlisted applicants are desperate for financial assistance, and cannot wait months, or even years to start receiving vouchers.
This is where charities come into play. Across the U.S., there are countless charities whose missions are to help people who, for whatever reason, have not been able to receive benefits.
Some of these charities, like the Salvation Army, are Christian or Catholic organizations. However, they help all people regardless of religious affiliation.
Depending on the state and county you live in, there may be different charities that are available to provide assistance. Most often, these charities provide assistance at the local, county level.
Although every charity may be different, the requirements to qualify can typically be:
- Being at risk of eviction or losing your home.
- Being low-income, as determined by the charity.
- Being a resident of the neighborhood or local area where your charity operates.
Oftentimes, charities that help with rental assistance may also help with mortgage payments and utility assistance. So, if you are looking for assistance paying your bills, be sure to include local charities in your search of organizations that may be able to help.
