Learn How To Make Phone Calls From Your iPad

Understanding iPad Phone Call Features and Requirements

iPad devices offer several ways to make phone calls, even though iPads don't have cellular phone numbers like traditional smartphones. Apple has built multiple calling features into iPad software that let you place calls over internet connections. Understanding which methods are available helps you choose the right approach for your situation.

The primary ways to make calls on iPad include using FaceTime, which comes built into all modern iPads; third-party apps like Skype, Google Meet, or WhatsApp; or using your iPhone if you have one on the same Apple account. Each method has different requirements and works in different situations. Some require Wi-Fi or cellular data connections, while others integrate with your existing phone service.

Apple released FaceTime calling capabilities starting with iOS 6 in 2012, and the feature has expanded significantly over the years. As of 2024, FaceTime remains one of the most integrated calling options on iPad. Statistics show that Apple devices are used for approximately 15% of all video calls globally, with FaceTime being a primary contributor to that figure.

Before attempting to make calls, you should verify that your iPad model supports the calling feature you want to use. Most iPad models from the last several years support FaceTime. You'll also need either a Wi-Fi connection or cellular data plan if your iPad has cellular capability. Additionally, you need an active Apple ID to use FaceTime.

Practical Takeaway: Check your iPad's model and iOS version before attempting to set up calling. Most iPad models released after 2015 support modern calling features through FaceTime or third-party apps. Ensure you have either Wi-Fi or cellular data available, as calls require an internet connection.

Setting Up FaceTime on Your iPad for Voice Calls

FaceTime is Apple's native calling and video conferencing service that comes pre-installed on all modern iPads. Unlike video calls where you see the other person, FaceTime audio calls let you talk to someone using only voice, similar to a traditional phone call. Setting up FaceTime requires just a few steps and uses your existing Apple ID.

To begin, open the Settings app on your iPad and scroll down to find "FaceTime" in the list of apps. Tap on FaceTime to open its settings page. You should see a toggle switch next to "FaceTime" at the top of the screen. If this toggle is gray, FaceTime is currently turned off. Tap the toggle to turn it green, which activates FaceTime on your device.

Next, verify your Apple ID is signed in. In the FaceTime settings, you should see your Apple ID email address listed. If you don't see an Apple ID listed, tap "Sign In with your Apple ID" and enter your credentials. You can use the same Apple ID you use for other Apple services like iCloud or the App Store.

Once FaceTime is enabled, you can choose which contact information will display when you call others. In the FaceTime settings, look for "Caller ID" or a similar option. You may be able to choose between displaying your Apple ID email or a phone number if you have one linked to your account. This helps the person you're calling recognize who the call is from.

You can also enable notifications for incoming FaceTime calls in the Settings app under Notifications > FaceTime. This ensures you'll be alerted when someone tries to reach you through FaceTime.

Practical Takeaway: Activate FaceTime through iPad Settings, confirm your Apple ID is signed in, and verify your caller ID settings. Most users can complete this setup in under two minutes. Once enabled, FaceTime appears as a calling option in the Contacts app.

Making FaceTime Audio Calls to Contacts

Once FaceTime is set up on your iPad, making voice calls is straightforward. You can call any contact who has an Apple device or who has a phone number associated with their Apple ID. FaceTime audio calls work over Wi-Fi or cellular data, so you don't need a traditional phone plan to make them.

To make a FaceTime audio call, open the Contacts app on your iPad. This app displays all your saved contacts. Find the person you want to call and tap their name to open their contact details. You should see a FaceTime button or icon near their phone number or email address. Look for an icon that resembles a video camera with a phone symbol or similar FaceTime indicator.

Tap the FaceTime button. A menu may appear showing you options for FaceTime audio or FaceTime video. Select "FaceTime Audio" to make a voice call rather than a video call. Your iPad will then initiate the call and display the recipient's name on screen while the call attempts to connect.

If the recipient has FaceTime enabled on their device, they will receive a notification about your incoming call. They can accept or decline the call. Once they accept, you'll hear a ringtone and then their voice when the connection is established.

You can also make FaceTime calls directly from the FaceTime app itself. Open the FaceTime app on your iPad and look for a button to start a new call, usually labeled with a "+" symbol or "New FaceTime." Tap this button, then search for the contact you want to call by name or enter their phone number or email address manually.

During a call, your screen displays options to mute your microphone, switch speakers, add more people to the call, or end the call. The speaker icon allows you to switch between using your iPad speaker or the receiver.

Practical Takeaway: Make FaceTime audio calls through the Contacts or FaceTime app by selecting a contact and tapping FaceTime Audio. Both you and the recipient need internet connection but not a traditional phone plan. Calls are free between FaceTime users.

Using Third-Party Apps for iPad Phone Calls

Beyond FaceTime, many other applications on the App Store offer calling features for iPad. These third-party apps often work with people who don't have Apple devices, making them useful for calling Android phones or reaching contacts on different platforms. Popular options include Skype, Google Meet, WhatsApp, and Viber.
