Learn How to Change Your Amazon Delivery Address

Understanding Amazon Delivery Address Changes

Amazon allows customers to modify their delivery address for orders in various situations. Whether you entered the wrong address by mistake, moved to a new location, or want to send a package somewhere other than your account address, Amazon provides ways to make these changes. The process differs depending on whether your order has already shipped or is still being prepared.

Your delivery address is one of the most important details in any online order. A mistake here can result in a package arriving at the wrong location, creating delays and frustration. According to Amazon's own data, address-related issues represent a significant portion of delivery problems reported by customers. Understanding when and how you can change this information helps prevent these problems.

The ability to change your delivery address depends on your order's current status in Amazon's fulfillment system. Orders progress through several stages: payment processing, picking and packing, shipment, delivery, and final delivery confirmation. Each stage has different rules about what changes you can make. Some changes are possible within hours, while others cannot be made once processing has begun.

Amazon's customer service team receives thousands of address change requests daily. Many of these requests could have been handled by the customer directly through the website or app if they had known about the available options. Learning these methods can save you time and reduce back-and-forth communication with support representatives.

Takeaway: Address changes are possible but timing matters. The sooner you catch an error or need a change, the more options you'll have available.

Changing Your Address Before Your Order Ships

The easiest time to change a delivery address is during the period between when you place your order and when Amazon begins preparing it for shipment. This window typically lasts from a few minutes to several hours, depending on product availability and current order volume. During this time, your order remains in a flexible state where modifications are relatively straightforward.

To change your address during this period, log into your Amazon account and navigate to "Your Orders" or "Returns and Orders." Find the specific order you want to modify and look for an "Edit Delivery Address" option or similar link. This button only appears if your order hasn't yet entered the packing phase. Click it to access a new window where you can select from your saved addresses or enter a completely new one.

When entering a new address, Amazon's system performs real-time verification. The address must be deliverable according to USPS, UPS, or FedEx standards, whichever carrier Amazon will use for your shipment. If you enter an address with missing information or formatting issues, the system will prompt you to correct it before accepting your change. This verification prevents problems like packages being returned to Amazon due to incomplete addresses.

Some products have restrictions that affect address changes. Items sold by third-party sellers may have different policies than items fulfilled by Amazon. Restricted items like hazardous materials, liquids, or certain electronics may only ship to specific address types. If you're trying to change the address for such an item and the system won't allow it, this restriction is likely the reason.

You can change your address multiple times before shipment begins, at no cost. There is no limit to how many times you can modify it. However, once you see a notification that your item is being prepared for shipment or has entered a warehouse facility, the address change option typically disappears from your order page.

Takeaway: Act quickly after placing your order. Check within the first hour if you need to change the address, as this gives you the best chance of making the modification yourself through your account.

Modifying Addresses After Shipment Has Begun

Once Amazon has begun picking and packing your order, address changes become more complicated. At this stage, your item has likely been assigned to a specific warehouse location and may be in the process of being packaged. The "Edit Delivery Address" option disappears from your order page. However, you still have options depending on how far along the shipment process has progressed.

If your order has been packed but not yet picked up by the carrier, you may be able to contact Amazon customer service to request an address change. Success depends on timing. Amazon's fulfillment centers operate on tight schedules, and packages move through the facility quickly. A request made within a few hours of packing might succeed, but one made after the package has been handed to the carrier will almost certainly fail.

To reach customer service, use Amazon's website or app. Navigate to "Your Orders," select the specific order, and look for a "Problem with order" or "Contact seller" button. You can then choose to call, chat, or message customer service. Explain that you need to change the delivery address and provide both the correct address and the order number. Have your account information ready for verification.

Customer service representatives have access to real-time information about where your package is in the fulfillment process. They can tell you whether changing the address is still possible. If the package has already been picked up by the carrier—UPS, FedEx, USPS, or Amazon's own delivery service—they cannot change the address themselves, but they may offer alternative solutions.

One alternative is to have Amazon issue a refund and place a new order with the correct address. This works well if the item is in stock and you don't need it urgently. Another option is to refuse the delivery when it arrives and request reshipment to the correct address. You would then need to follow the return process to send the package back to Amazon. This approach adds several days to receiving your item.

Takeaway: Between packing and carrier pickup is your narrow window for address changes post-submission. Contact customer service immediately if you realize a mistake during this period.

Changing Address After Your Package Ships with a Tracking Number

Once Amazon has handed your package to the delivery carrier and generated a tracking number, the address is locked in. You cannot change it through Amazon's system at this point. However, depending on which carrier is handling your package and how far it has progressed through their network, you may have options through the carrier itself.

First, locate your tracking number. This appears in your Amazon order confirmation email and in your "Your Orders" section. The tracking number tells you which carrier has your package: Amazon Logistics, USPS, UPS, or FedEx. Each carrier has different policies about address changes once a package is in transit.

Amazon Logistics, which handles many Amazon.com deliveries, generally does not allow address changes once the package is picked up. However, if the package hasn't yet reached the local delivery station, you might contact Amazon customer service one more time to explain the situation. They have limited ability to communicate with their logistics partners, but it's worth attempting.

USPS offers a service called Informed Delivery that provides real-time updates on packages. If your package is in USPS hands and hasn't reached your local post office for final delivery, you can file a request through the USPS website asking to redirect the package to a different address. You would need to provide the tracking number and the new delivery address. USPS charges a fee for this service, typically between $1.10 and $1.75 depending on services requested.

UPS and FedEx also offer address change services for packages already in transit. UPS calls theirs "Intercept" and FedEx calls theirs "FedEx Delivery Manager." Both services allow you to request a change if the package hasn't yet been delivered. Availability depends on whether the package is still at a hub facility or has reached the local delivery area. Fees vary but typically range from $5 to $15.

The most reliable option if your package has shipped is to refuse delivery when it arrives. When the delivery driver comes to your door with a package addressed to you at your old address, you can refuse to accept it. The package will be returned to the carrier, and after several days, a refund will be issued to your original payment method. You can then place a new order with the correct address.

Takeaway: Once a package is in carrier hands, your direct control is limited. Research your specific carrier's options immediately when you notice the address error.

Using Alternative Delivery Options for Future Orders

Beyond changing an address on an existing order, Amazon offers several delivery options that provide flexibility. Understanding these options can help you avoid address-related issues in future purchases. These features are built into Amazon's ordering system and available to most customers at no additional cost.
