Learn About Renewing Your Missouri License Plates

Understanding Missouri License Plate Renewal Basics

Missouri license plates expire every two years, with the expiration date printed on the plate itself. The Missouri Department of Revenue manages the renewal process for all vehicle owners in the state. When your plates approach their expiration date, you'll need to complete the renewal process to keep your vehicle legal to operate on public roads.

The expiration date on your Missouri plates appears in the upper right corner of the plate. For example, a plate expiring in 2025 will show "25" in that location. You can renew your plates before or after the expiration date, though operating a vehicle with expired plates is illegal and can result in fines or other penalties. Understanding the timing helps you plan ahead and avoid lapses in your registration.

Missouri offers multiple renewal methods to fit different preferences and schedules. You can renew by mail, online, or in person at a Missouri license office. Each method has different timeframes and requirements. Mail renewals typically take longer to process, while online renewals often provide results within days. In-person renewals at a license office can sometimes be completed the same day, depending on wait times and office procedures.

The renewal process involves verification of your vehicle information, payment of renewal fees, and issuance of new plates or renewal stickers. Fees vary based on vehicle type, weight, and whether you're renewing regular plates or specialized plates like those for disabled persons or military members. Most Missouri vehicle owners pay between $120 and $200 for biennial renewal, though this can be higher for commercial vehicles or specialty plates.

Takeaway: Mark your plate expiration date on your calendar two months before it expires, giving yourself time to complete the renewal process through your preferred method without rushing.

How to Renew Your Plates Online Through Missouri's System

The Missouri Department of Revenue offers online renewal through their official website for many vehicle owners. This method provides convenience and often faster processing than mail renewal. To use the online system, you'll need information from your current registration and proof of a current Missouri vehicle inspection if your vehicle requires one.

Before starting the online process, gather these documents: your current registration card or notice, your vehicle identification number (VIN), and your driver's license or Missouri identification number. If your vehicle is financed, you may need information from your lender. Having these details ready prevents delays and helps the system verify your information accurately.

The online renewal system guides you through several steps. First, you'll enter your vehicle information to locate your existing registration record. The system will then display your current registration details and any outstanding violations or issues. You'll review this information for accuracy and indicate whether anything has changed since your last renewal, such as a change of address or lender information.

Next, you'll confirm your vehicle's inspection status. Missouri requires an annual vehicle inspection for most vehicles. If your inspection is current, the system will recognize this. If your inspection has expired or doesn't appear in the system, you'll need to complete an inspection at an authorized Missouri inspection station before you can finalize your online renewal. The inspection covers brake condition, lights, windshield wipers, and emissions testing in certain areas.

Once you've verified all information, the system calculates your renewal fee based on your vehicle's type and weight. You'll pay the fee using a credit card or debit card. After payment is processed, the system provides a confirmation number. Processing typically takes three to five business days, after which you'll receive new plates by mail or renewal stickers, depending on what your vehicle needs.

Takeaway: Online renewal works best when you have all required documents ready and your vehicle inspection is current—gather these items before logging into the system to complete your renewal in one session.

Renewing Your Plates by Mail: Process and Timeline

Mail renewal offers an option for vehicle owners who prefer not to visit an office or use the online system. The Missouri Department of Revenue sends renewal notices by mail approximately 60 days before your plates expire. This notice contains instructions for mail renewal and includes the renewal form you'll need.

If you don't receive a renewal notice, you can request the renewal form by contacting the Missouri Department of Revenue. Having your current registration card available will help you provide the information needed to request the correct form. The form requires basic information: your name, address, vehicle identification number, and current plate number.

To renew by mail, complete the renewal form according to the instructions provided. Review the information carefully to ensure accuracy. If anything has changed since your last renewal—such as your address, vehicle condition, or lender information—note these changes on the form. Include a check or money order for the renewal fee in the amount shown on your renewal notice. Do not send cash by mail.

Mail your completed form and payment to the address shown on the renewal notice. The Department of Revenue recommends using certified mail or another tracking method so you can confirm receipt. Processing mail renewals typically takes two to three weeks from the date the department receives your materials. During busy periods, processing may take longer.

Once your renewal is processed, the department will mail your new plates or renewal stickers to your address on file. If you need your renewal completed by a specific date, consider the postal service delivery time when deciding whether mail renewal will work for your timeline. If your plates are expiring soon, in-person or online renewal may better suit your needs.

Takeaway: Mail renewal works well for people with flexible timelines—send your materials at least four weeks before your expiration date to account for postal delivery and processing time.

Renewing Your Plates In Person at a Missouri License Office

Visiting a Missouri license office provides the most direct path to plate renewal and offers the possibility of receiving new plates relatively quickly. The state operates multiple full-service license offices in different regions, and many county assessor offices also process plate renewals. Finding the office nearest to you on the Missouri Department of Revenue website helps you plan your visit.

Before visiting an office, gather the necessary documents. You'll need your current vehicle registration card, your vehicle identification number (VIN), proof of a current Missouri inspection (most vehicles), and a valid photo ID such as a driver's license. If your vehicle has a lienholder or is financed, bring lender information. Bringing these items prevents the need to return home for missing documents and keeps your appointment brief.

Many Missouri license offices operate on a walk-in basis, though some locations now use appointment systems. Check your local office's procedures on their website or by calling ahead. During peak times—early in the month or just before expiration dates—offices experience longer wait times. Visiting on a weekday morning or mid-month often means shorter lines and faster service.

When you arrive at the office, inform the staff member that you need to renew your vehicle registration plates. They'll verify your information, confirm your vehicle's inspection status, calculate your renewal fee, and process your payment. Some offices provide temporary registration while your new plates are produced. Other offices mail plates to your address. The staff member will explain what to expect for your specific situation.

Payment methods accepted at license offices typically include cash, checks, credit cards, and debit cards, though methods vary by office. The renewal is completed on the spot, so you leave with confirmation of your renewal and information about when to expect your new plates by mail if they're not produced in-office.

Takeaway: Visit a license office during mid-month on a weekday morning with all your documents ready, and you can complete your renewal in 30 minutes or less.

Special Circumstances: Military Members, Disabled Persons, and Specialty Plates

Missouri offers specialized plate options for certain vehicle owners, and renewal processes for these plates follow similar steps but may include additional requirements. Military service members can obtain special military service plates, which feature designs honoring different military branches. These plates renew following the same timeline and basic process as standard plates but may have different fee structures.

Vehicle owners with disabilities can obtain disabled person parking plates or placards, which allow parking in designated accessible spaces. These plates and placards require additional documentation during renewal, such as current proof of disability status from a healthcare provider or the Social Security Administration. The renewal notice you receive will indicate what documentation is needed for your specific plate type.

Missouri also offers personalized plates that display custom numbers and letters of your choice. Personalized plates renew through the same methods as standard plates. If you're renewing a personalized plate and wish to change the custom designation, you can indicate this preference during renewal. Additional fees apply for personalized
