Learn About Mailing Your California DMV Address Change

Understanding California DMV Address Change Requirements

California law requires vehicle owners to notify the Department of Motor Vehicles within 10 days of moving to a new address. This requirement applies whether you move within California or relocate from another state. The California Vehicle Code Section 14600 makes this a legal obligation, not optional.

When you change your address with the DMV, several documents become linked to your new location. Your driver's license, vehicle registration, and any commercial licenses you hold will all reflect the updated address on official records. This matters because law enforcement, insurance companies, and government agencies use DMV records to contact you about traffic violations, vehicle safety recalls, registration renewals, and other important notices.

If you fail to update your address within the required timeframe, you may face consequences. The DMV can impose fines, your vehicle registration may become invalid, and you might miss critical notifications about recalls or registration expirations. Additionally, if you receive a traffic ticket or citation, law enforcement relies on your current address to deliver the notice. An outdated address could result in missing court dates or accumulating additional penalties.

The DMV processes thousands of address changes monthly through multiple methods designed to accommodate different situations. Some people update their address in person at a local field office, while others use mail or online options. Understanding which method works best for your situation helps ensure your records update correctly and quickly.

Practical Takeaway: Review your current DMV records to confirm whether your address is current. If you've moved within the past 10 days or plan to move soon, plan to submit your address change through one of the available methods described in this guide.

Preparing Documents for Your Mailed Address Change

Mailing your address change to the California DMV requires gathering specific documents that prove your identity and new residence. Having the correct paperwork ready prevents delays and rejection of your submission. The DMV will not process incomplete applications, which means your address change could remain pending for weeks.

You'll need proof of California residency for your new address. Acceptable documents include utility bills showing your name and address, a lease agreement or rental contract, a mortgage statement, property tax documents, or a homeowner's insurance policy. These documents must show your current address and typically should be dated within the last 60 days, though the DMV may accept documents up to 90 days old depending on the type. Bank statements and credit card statements are generally not accepted as proof of residency.

You'll also need identification. Your current California driver's license or identification card serves this purpose. If you don't have a current California ID, you can use a passport, passport card, or other government-issued identification. Military personnel can provide military identification along with proof of residency.

For vehicle-related address changes, include your vehicle registration certificate (the pink slip or registration renewal notice). If you're updating your driver's license address only, just your ID and residency proof are needed. The form you'll submit is the Application to Change Address (Form DL 43), which you can obtain from the DMV website, local field offices, or some post offices.

Keep copies of all documents you send. The DMV does not return submitted documents, so photocopies ensure you have records for your files. If your mailing package gets lost, having copies lets you resubmit quickly.

Practical Takeaway: Create a checklist of required documents and gather everything before placing it in the mail. This prevents incomplete submissions that cause processing delays.

Completing Form DL 43: Application to Change Address

The DMV Form DL 43 is the official document you'll complete when mailing your address change. This form is straightforward but requires accurate information, as errors can delay processing or cause your submission to be rejected. The form contains sections for your personal information, your current DMV record details, and your new address.

Start by filling in your full legal name exactly as it appears on your current driver's license or DMV identification. Include your middle name or initial if it appears on your license. Misspellings or variations from your official record can create processing issues. Write your date of birth in the format requested (typically MM/DD/YYYY).

Next, enter your current address—the address currently listed with the DMV. This helps DMV staff locate your existing record. Then clearly print your new address in the designated section. Make sure to include the complete street address, city, state, and ZIP code. If you have a rural route or post office box, enter that information as provided by your mail carrier.

Indicate whether you're changing your driver's license address, vehicle registration address, or both. Most people need to update both. Check all appropriate boxes to ensure all your records get updated. Leave blank any sections that don't apply to your situation.

Sign and date the form. An unsigned form will be returned without processing. Print your name below your signature. If someone else is submitting the form on your behalf, they should not sign it—only you or someone with power of attorney should sign.

Double-check the entire form before sealing your envelope. Common mistakes include incomplete addresses, mismatched names between your ID and the form, and missing signatures. Taking five minutes to review prevents the need to resubmit.

Practical Takeaway: Before mailing, read through Form DL 43 completely and verify that every blank requiring information is filled out accurately and that you've signed and dated the form.

Mailing Your Address Change to the DMV

Once you've prepared your documents and completed Form DL 43, you're ready to mail your package to the California DMV. The DMV has a dedicated address for receiving mailed forms and documents. Mail your envelope to: California Department of Motor Vehicles, P.O. Box 942869, Sacramento, CA 94269-0001.

Use First-Class Mail or Priority Mail to ensure your package travels promptly through the postal system. First-Class Mail typically takes 3-5 business days from most California locations, while Priority Mail arrives faster but costs more. Do not use slower mail services like Media Mail or standard ground mail, as these can take weeks and leave your address change in limbo during that period.

Consider using tracking services available through the U.S. Postal Service. When you purchase tracking, you'll receive a tracking number that lets you monitor your package's journey from your local post office to the DMV facility in Sacramento. This helps you confirm delivery and identify any issues if your package doesn't arrive.

Place all required documents in a single envelope. Include your completed Form DL 43, proof of residency, a copy of your driver's license or ID, and your vehicle registration if applicable. Include copies of everything, keeping originals for your records. Some people also include a simple cover letter listing what's enclosed, which helps DMV staff organize the materials.

The DMV typically processes mailed address changes within 7-10 business days after receiving them. Processing times can be longer during peak periods or if your submission requires additional verification. Once processed, the DMV will send you a new registration certificate reflecting your updated address, or a notification that your records have been updated.

Practical Takeaway: Use tracked mail services and keep the tracking number until you receive confirmation that your address change has been processed. This creates a record and helps you follow up if needed.

What Happens After You Mail Your Address Change

After the DMV receives your mailed address change, the processing timeline depends on several factors. Standard processing usually takes 7-10 business days from the date the DMV receives your package. However, seasonal fluctuations can extend this. The DMV typically experiences higher submission volumes in July and August when many people relocate, which can add several days to processing times.

When your address change is processed, the DMV updates its database records. Your driver's license, vehicle registration, and identification information all reflect the new address. If you requested new documents as part of your change, the DMV will mail these to you at your new address. New registration certificates typically arrive within 15-20 days after processing. Your driver's license remains valid at your old address until the renewal cycle, but the DMV's records show your current information for official purposes.

Insurance companies access updated DMV records, so your auto insurance company should receive notification of your address change. Contact your insurance provider separately to confirm they've updated their records, as some insurers require you to notify them directly regardless of DMV updates. Failing to
