How to Change Your Facebook Name Guide

Understanding Facebook Name Change Basics

Facebook allows users to change their name through the platform's built-in settings. This feature exists to help people update their profile information when their circumstances change. Whether you've recently married, divorced, gone through a legal name change, or simply prefer a different name on the platform, Facebook provides a straightforward method to make this update.

The name you display on Facebook is separate from your login information. Your email address or phone number remains your login credential, so changing your name won't affect how you sign into your account. This distinction is important because many users worry that updating their display name will somehow lock them out of their account.

Facebook has specific rules about name changes to maintain community safety and prevent impersonation. The platform requires that your name follow certain guidelines: it must be the name you go by in everyday life, it cannot include numbers or special symbols (with limited exceptions like hyphens or apostrophes), and it should not contain URLs, email addresses, or hashtags. These rules apply whether your name appears in English or other languages supported by Facebook.

You can change your Facebook name every 60 days. This means if you just changed your name, you'll need to wait approximately two months before making another change. This limitation helps prevent misuse of the feature and keeps the platform more secure.

Practical Takeaway: Before attempting to change your name, consider what name you want to use. Make sure it's a name you actually go by in real life, and check that it doesn't contain numbers, special characters, or other elements that Facebook prohibits. This preparation will help your name change go through without issues.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Desktop Users

Changing your Facebook name on a computer is a process that takes just a few minutes. Start by opening Facebook and signing into your account if you're not already logged in. Look for the downward-pointing arrow or menu icon in the top right corner of your screen—this is typically located next to your name or profile picture.

Click on that menu icon to open a dropdown list of options. From this list, find and click on "Settings & Privacy," then select "Settings." This takes you to your account settings page. On the left side of this page, you'll see a list of different settings categories. Look for "Personal Information" and click on it.

Within the Personal Information section, you'll see a field labeled "Name." Your current Facebook name appears in this field. Click on the "Edit" button or directly on the name field to begin making changes. A text box will appear where you can type your new name.

Clear out your current name and type the new name you want to use. Remember that Facebook's name guidelines apply here—use only letters, hyphens, and apostrophes where appropriate. Avoid numbers, special symbols, or extra spaces. After typing your new name, look for a "Review Change" button or similar option.

Facebook will show you a preview of how your new name will appear on your profile. Review this carefully to make sure everything looks correct. Once you're satisfied, click the confirmation button—this might say "Save Changes," "Confirm," or something similar depending on your specific version of Facebook.

Practical Takeaway: Write down your desired new name before you start this process, and double-check the spelling. This prevents typing mistakes and ensures you get the exact name you want on your profile. The preview step gives you one final chance to catch any errors before the change becomes official.

Mobile App Instructions for iPhone and Android

If you prefer using Facebook through the mobile app on your smartphone, the process is similar but uses a slightly different navigation path. Open the Facebook app on your device and make sure you're signed into your account. Look at the bottom of your screen—you should see several tabs or icons. On iPhone, you'll typically see a menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the bottom right corner. On Android devices, this might appear in different locations depending on your phone model.

Tap on this menu icon to open the navigation menu. Scroll down through the options until you find "Settings & Privacy." Tap on this option, then select "Settings" from the submenu that appears. The app will take you to your settings page.

Look for "Personal Information" in the settings menu. On some versions of the app, this section might be labeled differently or placed under "Account." Once you locate it, tap on it to expand that section. You should see your name listed there with an "Edit" button or pencil icon next to it.

Tap the Edit button or pencil icon to open the name editing field. Delete your current name and type your new name into the text box. The same guidelines apply on mobile as on desktop—stick to letters, hyphens, and apostrophes only. Make sure to double-check your spelling before proceeding.

After typing your new name, the app will typically show you a preview or ask you to confirm the change. Read through this confirmation screen carefully to ensure your new name appears exactly as you want it. Once you've verified everything, tap the confirmation button to save your changes. The app will process your request, and your name change should take effect within a few moments.

Practical Takeaway: Mobile app interfaces can vary based on which version you have installed and whether you're using an iPhone or Android device. If you can't find the exact menu options described, try using your phone's search function within the app or updating your Facebook app to the latest version for the most current interface.

What to Do If Your Name Change Request Is Rejected

Occasionally, Facebook rejects name change requests. This happens when the name you've submitted doesn't meet the platform's guidelines. Understanding why your request was rejected helps you fix the problem and try again. The most common reason for rejection is including numbers, symbols, or special characters that Facebook doesn't permit in names. For example, if you tried to use "Mary2024" or "John@123," Facebook would reject these because they contain numbers.

Another frequent reason for rejection is using a name that doesn't appear to be a real name that someone goes by daily. Facebook is trying to prevent fake accounts and impersonation, so unusual names or names that look like they might be a character name, brand name, or novelty name can trigger rejection. This doesn't mean you can't use creative names, but they should still be plausible as actual names people use.

If Facebook rejects your name change, the system typically provides a message explaining why. Read this message carefully—it often contains specific information about which guideline your chosen name violated. Common issues include using all capital letters (which can look like a username rather than a real name), including URLs or email addresses, or using excessive punctuation.

To resolve a rejected name change, modify your name to comply with Facebook's guidelines and try again. If you're attempting to use a legitimate name that contains unusual characters, consider how it might appear in simplified form. For instance, if your name includes an accent mark or special diacritic, try using the standard letter without the accent to see if that works.

If you believe your name follows all guidelines and was rejected in error, Facebook offers an option to request a review. On the rejection page, look for a button or link that says "Appeal" or "Request Review." When you select this option, you can provide additional information about your name and explain why it should be permitted. Facebook staff will review your request and make a final determination.

Practical Takeaway: Keep your desired name simple and straightforward. If your first attempt is rejected, identify which specific guideline caused the problem and adjust accordingly. Most rejected names can be approved with minor modifications that still allow you to represent yourself the way you want.

Important Timing Restrictions and Cooldown Periods

Facebook implements a 60-day waiting period between name changes. This means if you successfully changed your name on January 15th, you cannot change it again until approximately March 15th. This restriction applies to all users without exception, regardless of how old their account is or their account status. Understanding this timing helps you plan ahead if you anticipate needing multiple name changes.

The 60-day period is measured from the date your last name change was confirmed, not from when you submitted the request. So if you submitted a name change on January 10th but it wasn't confirmed until January 15th, the 60-day countdown starts from January 15th. Keep track of when your name change actually goes into effect so you know when you'll be eligible to make another change.
