Free Guide to Using Your Delta Companion Pass

Understanding What the Delta Companion Pass Is

The Delta Companion Pass is a benefit that Delta Air Lines offers to certain cardholders and frequent flyers. When you have an active Companion Pass, you can bring another person on flights with you at a significantly reduced cost. Instead of paying full price for your traveling companion's ticket, you typically pay only taxes and fees—which usually amounts to $0 to $10 per flight segment, depending on the route.

Delta has offered this pass through various programs over the years. The most common way people obtain it is through co-branded Delta credit cards. When you open one of these cards and meet the spending requirements, the bank may provide you with a Companion Pass as a benefit. Some elite frequent flyer members also receive this pass as part of their status benefits.

The pass works on published Delta flights and partners within Delta's network. However, there are restrictions. You cannot use it for basic economy fares, and it typically cannot be combined with other discounted fares or promotional offers. The companion must be at least 15 years old and fly with you on the same itinerary. You cannot use the pass to book yourself a ticket—it only covers the cost reduction for your companion.

Each pass has an expiration date, and you must use it before that date passes. The length of validity varies depending on how you received the pass. Understanding these basic rules helps you plan trips strategically and get the most value from the benefit.

Practical Takeaway: Review your credit card benefits statement or Delta account dashboard to confirm whether you currently have an active Companion Pass and check its expiration date. Note the specific terms that came with your pass, as different credit cards and promotions may have slightly different rules.

How to Check Your Companion Pass Status

Before you can use your Companion Pass, you need to know whether you actually have one and when it expires. The process is straightforward and can be completed in just a few minutes.

If you obtained your pass through a Delta credit card, your card issuer should have notified you when the benefit was added to your account. The notification may have come via email, mail, or appeared in your online banking portal. You can review that original communication to confirm the expiration date. Alternatively, you can log into your credit card issuer's website and look for a benefits section that lists your Companion Pass status.

You can also check directly through Delta's website. Log into your SkyMiles account and navigate to your profile or account settings. Many accounts display active passes in a dedicated section. If you cannot find it easily, look for a "Benefits" or "My Passes" section. If you have an active pass, it should show the expiration date clearly.

If you are a Delta elite frequent flyer member, your status may come with a Companion Pass benefit automatically. Log into your SkyMiles account and check your membership benefits page. This page outlines all the perks that come with your status level, including whether a Companion Pass is included.

If you have questions about your pass after reviewing these sources, you can contact Delta's customer service or your credit card issuer's customer service line. Have your membership number or card number ready when you call.

Practical Takeaway: Set a reminder on your calendar for one month before your Companion Pass expires. This gives you time to plan a trip using the pass before it becomes invalid. Check your account status now to find this expiration date.

Booking a Flight With Your Companion Pass

Once you have confirmed that you have an active Companion Pass, the booking process involves a few specific steps. Understanding the process helps avoid mistakes that could prevent you from using the pass.

Start by visiting the Delta website and searching for your desired flight as you normally would. You will enter your departure and arrival cities, your travel dates, and passenger information. At this point, book the flight for yourself only—do not try to add your companion yet. Complete the purchase for your own ticket using your preferred payment method.

After you have booked your ticket, you will then add your companion to the reservation. Do not try to book both passengers in the same transaction. Instead, once your ticket is confirmed, look for an option to add a passenger or add a companion pass holder. Some versions of the Delta website display this as "Add Companion Pass Booking" or similar language. You will enter your companion's information and then apply your Companion Pass to their ticket.

Your companion's ticket will be issued for only the taxes and fees portion of the fare. You will receive confirmation of both your ticket and your companion's ticket. Save these confirmation numbers, as you will need them at the airport.

Note that Companion Pass bookings cannot be made through third-party travel websites or phone bookings in some cases—you may need to book through Delta's official website or contact Delta directly. If you run into technical issues, Delta's phone line can walk you through the process.

Be aware of blackout dates or restrictions that may apply to your specific pass. Some passes cannot be used during peak travel periods or on certain routes. Check the terms that came with your pass before booking.

Practical Takeaway: Write down the exact steps and any restrictions listed in your pass terms before you begin booking. This prevents you from wasting time on a booking that does not work with your specific pass terms.

Maximizing the Value of Your Companion Pass

A Companion Pass can save you substantial money if you use it strategically. The real value comes from booking flights where the regular companion ticket price is high. For example, if you are flying cross-country on a peak travel date, a full companion ticket might normally cost $400 to $600. Using your Companion Pass reduces that to $0 to $10 in taxes and fees, saving you hundreds of dollars.

To maximize your savings, consider booking long-haul domestic flights or short-haul flights during expensive travel periods. A flight from New York to Los Angeles in December, for instance, might have a very high base fare. Using your pass on this route gives you greater savings than using it on a budget route that already costs very little.

You can also look at booking premium cabin flights with your companion. If the Companion Pass covers business or first-class tickets on your airline (rules vary by pass type), you could provide your companion with premium travel at minimal cost. Check your pass terms to see what cabin classes are permitted.

Consider timing your trip to use the pass before it expires but while you can still book a good fare. Some people book their trips several months in advance during off-peak seasons when base fares are lower, then upgrade their companion's ticket closer to departure to a better cabin if permitted. This approach requires flexibility but can provide additional value.

Do not waste a valuable Companion Pass on a short regional flight where a full companion ticket might cost only $100 to $150. If possible, plan a trip where the companion ticket would normally have a high base fare. Track your airline's pricing over several weeks if you have time, and book when you spot high fares on your desired route.

Practical Takeaway: Make a list of three to five flights you would like to take in the next few months before your pass expires. Check the pricing for each route over the next two weeks. Plan to book the flight where your companion's regular ticket would cost the most, saving you the most money.

Rules and Restrictions You Should Know

Companion Pass benefits come with specific rules that you must follow for the pass to be valid. Violating these rules could result in the companion ticket being cancelled or additional charges being applied.

First, the companion must travel on the same itinerary as you—meaning you must be on the same flights. You cannot use the pass to book a ticket for someone who is traveling separately or on different dates. Both of you must depart on the same flight and arrive at the same destination together.

Second, the companion typically must be 15 years old or older. Some airlines have different age rules, so check your specific pass terms. The companion must have a valid form of identification for check-in.

Third, Companion Pass bookings usually cannot be made on basic economy fares. If the cheapest available fare is a basic economy fare, you may not be able to use the pass for that flight. You would need to book a higher cabin class to use the pass.

Fourth, you cannot combine the Companion Pass with other promotional offers, sale
