What USCIS Address Updates Are and Why They Matter

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is the federal agency responsible for processing immigration cases, including applications for green cards, citizenship, work permits, and many other immigration benefits. When you have a case pending with USCIS, the agency needs to know where to send you official documents and notices about your case status.

An address update with USCIS is a change of mailing address on file with the agency. If you move to a new home, post office box, or location while your immigration case is pending, it is important to inform USCIS of your new address. This ensures that official notices, decisions, and other critical documents reach you without delay.

According to USCIS data, thousands of cases experience delays or complications each year because applicants do not update their addresses. Missing a notice from USCIS can have serious consequences. For example, if USCIS sends a notice to your old address and you do not receive it, you might miss an appointment, a deadline to submit additional documents, or a decision on your case. In some situations, missing a deadline can result in your case being denied or dismissed.

USCIS typically sends notices by regular mail to the address on file. While you can set up an online account to track some case information, official notices are still mailed to your address. This makes keeping your address current one of the most basic but critical steps in managing any USCIS case.

Practical takeaway: Update your address with USCIS within 10 days of moving. Do this even if you think your case may be closing soon, because unexpected delays or requests for additional information can occur at any time.

How to Update Your Address With USCIS

USCIS provides several methods to change your mailing address on file. The method you use depends on whether you have an online USCIS account, what type of case you have, and your personal preferences.

The primary method is through your online USCIS account, also called a myUSCIS account. If you created an account when you filed your case or have set one up since, you can log in and update your address yourself. To do this, go to www.uscis.gov, click "Sign In," enter your username and password, and look for the option to update your address. This method is available 24 hours a day and provides immediate confirmation of your change. USCIS states that address changes made online typically take effect within one business day.

If you do not have an online account or prefer not to use one, you can submit Form I-865, Notice of Address Change. This is a short form with basic fields for your name, case number, old address, and new address. You can print the form from www.uscis.gov and mail it to the address listed on the form. The address where you send this form depends on your case type. For most family-based cases, employment-based cases, and adjustment of status cases, you send it to the USCIS Service Center handling your case. Processing by mail typically takes 5 to 10 business days.

Another option is to call USCIS's customer service line at 1-800-375-5283. A representative can update your address over the phone, though you will need to provide your case number and other identifying information. Hours of operation vary, and wait times can be long during busy periods.

If you are represented by an immigration attorney or accredited representative, that person can update your address on your behalf. They may file an updated Form G-28, Notice of Entry of Appearance as Attorney or Accredited Representative, which includes your new address. Alternatively, your representative can contact USCIS directly on your behalf.

Practical takeaway: Use your online myUSCIS account if you have one, as it is the fastest method. If you do not have an account, download and mail Form I-865 within 10 days of moving. Keep a copy of the form for your records.

Understanding USCIS Notice Types and What They Require

USCIS sends different types of notices depending on your case status and what action is needed. Understanding what each notice means and what response it requires helps you avoid missing important deadlines.

A Notice to Appear (NTA) is sent in removal proceedings. It tells you that USCIS or Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has started removal proceedings against you and includes the date, time, and location of your hearing. This is one of the most critical notices you can receive. Missing a hearing date listed in an NTA can result in an automatic removal order against you, even if you had a valid legal defense. If you receive an NTA, you must keep your address current so you receive all related documents.

A Request for Evidence (RFE) or a Notice of Intent to Deny (NOID) means USCIS needs more information before making a decision on your case. An RFE asks you to submit additional documents, medical exams, police clearances, or other evidence within a specific timeframe, usually 84 days. A NOID tells you that USCIS is considering denying your case and gives you a chance to respond with additional information or arguments. If you do not receive these notices because your address is outdated, you may miss the deadline to respond, and your case could be denied by default.

An Approval Notice means USCIS has approved your case. This notice explains what has been approved and what you must do next, such as scheduling an oath ceremony for citizenship or receiving your green card at a USCIS office. Even approval notices require action, so keeping your address current is important.

A Biometrics Appointment Notice tells you when and where to go for fingerprints and a photo. These appointments are required for many case types. If you miss a biometrics appointment because you did not receive the notice, your case may be denied or delayed significantly.

An Interview Notice tells you the date and location of your USCIS interview. Like biometrics appointments, missing an interview without a valid reason can result in case denial.

Practical takeaway: Keep your address current throughout your entire USCIS case, from filing to final decision. Any notice can be critical, and the consequences of missing one are serious.

Common Mistakes People Make With Address Updates

Many people who have USCIS cases make preventable errors when updating their addresses. Learning about these mistakes can help you avoid them.

One common mistake is updating your address in only one place. For example, someone might create a myUSCIS online account and update their address there, but the online account only covers certain case types. If your case is with a Service Center that does not sync with the online portal, or if you have multiple pending cases, updating in only one location may not notify all relevant offices. The safest approach is to use Form I-865 mailed to the specific USCIS office handling your case, as this method is documented in writing and creates a record.

Another mistake is assuming that USCIS will automatically update your address if you file additional paperwork from your new address. This is not always true. Some USCIS systems do not automatically cross-reference multiple documents, so submitting a form from your new address does not guarantee that the office will update your official address on file. It is better to formally notify them using one of the official methods.

People sometimes delay updating their address, thinking they will do it after they settle into their new home or when they have time. However, USCIS recommends updating within 10 days of moving. Every day you wait increases the risk that a notice could be mailed to your old address.

Some people do not keep documentation of their address change. If you mail Form I-865, you should keep a copy and consider mailing it via certified mail with return receipt requested. This creates proof that USCIS received your change request. This documentation can be valuable if there is ever a dispute about whether your address was updated or when it was updated.

Another error is not updating your address when you are represented by an attorney. Some people assume their attorney's office address will receive all mail, but USCIS still sends notices to the applicant's address on file unless an attorney specifically is designated to receive notices. Updating your current home address is still necessary.

Practical takeaway: Update your address formally using Form I-865 or your online account, keep a copy of the update
