Free Guide to Republic Services Trash and Recycling

Understanding Republic Services and Their Service Areas

Republic Services is one of the largest waste management companies in the United States, operating in all 50 states plus Puerto Rico and Canada. The company provides trash collection, recycling, and yard waste services to millions of residential and commercial customers. As of 2023, Republic Services operates more than 200 landfills and transfer stations across North America, making it a major player in how communities handle waste.

The company serves different regions with varying service options. Some areas receive weekly trash pickup, while others may have twice-weekly service depending on local contracts and community needs. Republic Services also manages recycling programs that differ by location—what gets recycled in one city might not be accepted in another due to differences in local sorting facilities and market demands for recycled materials.

When Republic Services operates in a community, they typically work under contracts with city or county governments. These contracts outline collection schedules, service areas, and what materials residents can place at the curb. Understanding these local rules matters because putting the wrong items in your recycling bin can actually jam sorting equipment at recycling facilities, causing expensive shutdowns and safety issues for workers.

Republic Services' service areas have grown significantly over the past decade through acquisitions of smaller waste companies. This means that in some regions, the company may handle trash, recycling, and yard waste all together, while in other areas they might only manage trash collection. Knowing which services operate in your specific neighborhood requires checking your local service provider information, typically found on your bill or the company's website.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your specific service area on your trash bill or your local government's website. This tells you which Republic Services facilities serve your neighborhood and what collection schedules apply to your address.

How Trash Collection Works With Republic Services

Republic Services collects residential trash according to schedules set by local municipalities. Most communities receive trash pickup once per week, though some areas have twice-weekly service, particularly in warm climates where decomposition accelerates. The company uses standardized collection trucks that compress waste as they move through neighborhoods, typically serving routes that include 800 to 1,200 residential stops per day.

The basic process works like this: residents place trash in carts or bins at their curb on designated collection days. Republic Services trucks arrive with mechanical arms that grab these containers, lift them over the truck bed, and dump the contents automatically. This entire process takes seconds per residence, which is why timing matters—if your cart isn't at the curb by the scheduled pickup window, it likely won't be collected that week.

Collection carts typically have volumes of 32, 64, or 96 gallons, depending on what customers request or what their local government provides. A 64-gallon cart, which is standard in many areas, holds roughly the equivalent of four to five kitchen garbage bags of typical household waste. Residents can request different cart sizes based on their household waste generation, though some communities charge different rates for larger or smaller containers.

Republic Services has specific rules about what can go in trash carts. Items like hazardous materials (paint, batteries, motor oil), large appliances, construction debris, and yard waste generally cannot go in regular trash. Placing these items in trash carts can create safety hazards for collection workers and cause problems at disposal facilities. Some items may require special handling or must be taken to separate facilities.

The trash collected by Republic Services trucks goes to landfills or waste-to-energy facilities. Modern landfills operate under strict environmental regulations with liners, drainage systems, and monitoring equipment to prevent contamination of groundwater. Waste-to-energy facilities burn trash to generate electricity, which some communities use as part of their waste management strategy.

Practical Takeaway: Set your trash cart at the curb the evening before collection or early morning of collection day, ensuring it's placed at least 3 feet from obstacles. Check your bill or local government website for your specific collection day and time window.

Recycling Programs and What Materials Are Accepted

Republic Services operates recycling programs in many of its service areas, though what materials get accepted varies significantly by location. This variation exists because different communities have different recycling equipment and different markets for recycled materials. A plastic type that's valuable in one region might have no buyer in another region, making it uneconomical to recycle.

Most Republic Services recycling programs accept common materials including cardboard, paper, aluminum cans, and steel cans. Plastic bottles and containers are typically accepted, though the specific types vary—some programs take all plastics numbered 1-7, while others accept only plastics numbered 1-2. Glass is accepted in many programs, though some communities have stopped accepting glass due to contamination issues at sorting facilities where glass breaks and contaminates other recyclables.

The recycling process begins with collection, just like trash. Recycling carts are transported to sorting facilities where workers and machines separate materials by type. This separation is critical because contamination—like food waste left in containers or plastic bags placed in recycling—can damage sorting equipment or make entire batches of recyclables unmarketable. When contamination reaches certain levels, facilities may send batches to landfills instead of recycling them.

After sorting, recyclable materials go to manufacturers who use them to make new products. Aluminum from cans gets melted and reformed into new cans or other aluminum products. Cardboard becomes new cardboard or paper products. Plastic gets converted into fibers for clothing, new bottles, or plastic lumber. This manufacturing process uses less energy and fewer raw materials than making products from virgin materials, which is the primary environmental benefit of recycling.

Different communities have different rules about preparation. Some programs ask residents to remove caps and lids from bottles before recycling; others prefer caps stay on. Some programs accept plastic bags, while others specifically request that bags not be included because they tangle sorting equipment. Learning your specific community's rules prevents contamination and keeps sorting facilities operating efficiently.

Practical Takeaway: Contact your local Republic Services location or check your service area's website for a specific list of accepted recyclable materials and preparation instructions. Rinse containers but don't need to remove labels. Follow your community's specific guidelines to prevent equipment damage at sorting facilities.

Yard Waste and Organic Material Programs

Many Republic Services areas operate yard waste programs that handle leaves, grass clippings, branches, and other organic material from landscaping. These programs keep yard waste out of landfills where it would take decades to decompose, and instead divert it to facilities that process it into compost or mulch. As of recent data, yard waste comprises roughly 5-10% of landfill content in most communities, making these programs significant for reducing overall landfill volume.

Yard waste is typically collected in special brown or green carts or in paper bags, depending on what the local program accepts. Some communities collect yard waste on a different schedule than trash—perhaps bi-weekly during growing seasons or only during certain months when landscaping activity peaks. Collection may be weekly during spring and fall months when leaf season occurs, and monthly or not at all during winter.

The materials that qualify for yard waste programs usually include grass clippings, leaves, small branches (usually up to 4 inches in diameter), twigs, and garden plants. What doesn't qualify typically includes soil, rocks, sod, treated wood, diseased plants, or invasive species. Some communities restrict certain materials even though they're technically organic because they require special handling or might spread problems like diseases or invasive plants to composting facilities.

Processing yard waste involves chipping, shredding, and composting operations. Large branch material gets chipped into smaller pieces. Leaves and grass get combined and allowed to decompose, either in windrows (long piles that are turned regularly) or in enclosed systems. The resulting compost contains nutrients that improve soil quality. Some facilities sell finished compost back to the community, while others give it away or use it for local landscaping projects and erosion control.

Residents who don't want to use the formal yard waste program have alternatives. Backyard composting works for small-scale operations, though it requires space and management. Mulching mowers can process leaves and clippings directly on lawns. Some communities have yard waste drop-off centers where residents can bring material themselves. These alternatives reduce the amount of yard waste requiring collection and processing.

Practical Takeaway: Determine if your service area offers yard waste collection and when collection occurs in your area. If available, learn which materials qualify and whether your community uses carts, bags,
