Understanding ACT Scores and Score Reports

The ACT is a standardized test taken by high school students across the United States. According to the ACT organization, over 1.8 million students took the ACT in 2023. Your ACT score report contains several important pieces of information that colleges and universities use during the admissions process.

Your score report includes your composite score, which ranges from 1 to 36. This composite score represents the average of your four test section scores: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science. Each section also receives its own score on the same 1-36 scale. Additionally, your report shows subscores for specific skill areas within each section, giving a more detailed picture of your strengths and areas for improvement.

The report also contains demographic information you provided when registering for the test, your high school code, and information about which colleges and universities you selected to receive your scores. If you took the ACT multiple times, your report will show all your test dates and scores from the past years.

Understanding what information appears on your score report helps you know what to expect when you retrieve it online. Your report will show when you took the test, your performance on each section, and any writing scores if you took the optional writing portion of the ACT. The ACT organization maintains these records in their online system, allowing you to view them whenever you need them for college applications or other purposes.

Practical Takeaway: Before looking for your scores online, understand that your report will show a composite score from 1-36, individual section scores, and your registration information. Knowing what to look for makes the retrieval process more straightforward.

Creating Your ACT Account and Logging In

To view your ACT scores online, you need to create or access an ACT account on the official ACT website. The process begins at act.org, where you can locate the sign-in option. If you have never created an ACT account before, you will need to register to establish one.

When creating your account, you will need personal information including your full name, date of birth, and email address. The ACT system uses this information to match you with your test records. It is important to use accurate information that matches what you provided when you originally registered for your ACT test. If there are discrepancies between your account information and your registration information, you may have difficulty locating your scores.

After providing your basic information, you will create a password. The ACT recommends using a strong password that includes a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. This protects your account and your personal information. Keep your password in a safe location so you can access your account whenever you need to check your scores or send them to colleges.

Once your account is created, you can log in using your email address and password. If you have taken the ACT multiple times, all of your test records and scores will appear in your account once you log in. You may be asked to verify your identity through an email confirmation process. Check your email inbox and spam folder for a message from the ACT organization asking you to verify your account. Completing this verification step is necessary before you can view your scores.

Practical Takeaway: Start by visiting act.org and creating an account with accurate personal information that matches your test registration. Make sure to verify your email address to gain full access to your score records.

Finding Your Scores in Your ACT Account

After logging into your ACT account, you will see your dashboard or account homepage. This page typically displays a summary of your ACT activity. Look for a section labeled "Scores," "Test Scores," or "My Scores" depending on how the current version of the website is organized. Clicking on this section will show you all of your test attempts and their corresponding scores.

If you took the ACT on multiple dates, each test date will be listed separately. Your most recent scores usually appear first, though you can typically view all historical scores by scrolling or selecting different test dates. Each test date entry will show your composite score prominently, along with the individual section scores for English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science.

When you click on a specific test date, a detailed score report will open. This report shows not just your overall scores but also your subscores within each section. For example, in the English section, you might see separate scores for punctuation, grammar and usage, and sentence structure. The Mathematics section breaks down into pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry subscores. These subscores help identify which specific areas you performed well in and which areas might need more focus if you plan to retake the test.

Your score report will also display the date you took the test, your percentile ranking compared to other test-takers, and information about which colleges you sent your scores to at the time of testing. The percentile shows what percentage of test-takers scored at or below your score. For example, if you scored in the 75th percentile, this means 75 percent of test-takers scored at or below your score.

Practical Takeaway: Once logged in, navigate to the Scores section to view all your test dates and scores. Click on individual test dates to see detailed breakdowns of your performance across different skill areas and your percentile ranking.

Understanding Score Delivery Options and Timing

The ACT provides several options for sending your scores to colleges and universities. Understanding these options helps you manage when your scores reach admissions offices. When you took the ACT, you likely selected up to four colleges to receive your scores for free on test day. These free score reports are sent automatically and typically reach colleges within a few days of the test administration date.

If you need to send your scores to additional colleges beyond the four free recipients, you can order additional score reports through your ACT account. The ACT charges a fee for each additional score report sent. The cost and delivery time for these additional reports can be found on the ACT website. Standard delivery typically takes 5-8 business days, though faster delivery options may be available at an additional cost.

Understanding when your scores were sent is important for college application timelines. Many colleges have application deadlines in November, December, and January for regular decision admissions. Your scores need to arrive at the college by their admissions deadline for the college to consider them in your application review. You can see in your ACT account which colleges you selected as score recipients and when those scores were sent.

Official score reports sent from the ACT come with security features that colleges recognize as genuine. You cannot simply print your online score report and submit it to colleges; colleges require official scores sent directly from the ACT organization. However, viewing your scores online in your account allows you to confirm what your scores are before you send them to additional colleges or before colleges receive them. If you notice an error in your scores, you can contact the ACT organization to discuss your concerns before sending your scores to additional institutions.

Practical Takeaway: Review your score delivery history in your account to confirm which colleges received your scores and when. If you need to send scores to additional colleges, order them through your account with awareness of delivery timelines and any associated fees.

Troubleshooting Common Issues When Accessing Scores

Sometimes students encounter problems when trying to view their ACT scores online. One of the most common issues is difficulty remembering login information. If you cannot remember your password, the ACT website has a password reset feature. Look for a "Forgot Password" link on the login page. Click this link and enter the email address associated with your account. The ACT will send you an email with instructions to create a new password. Check your email inbox and spam folder for this message.

Another common problem occurs when students register for the ACT with one name but create their online account with a different name. For example, if you registered with your legal name but your account uses a nickname, the system may not match your test records to your account. In this situation, contact the ACT customer service team. They can help you update your account information or merge test records to the correct account. The ACT customer service number and email address are located on the official ACT website.

Some students report that their test scores do not appear in their account immediately after taking the test. Score reporting typically takes several days after the test administration date. During busy testing seasons, such as after national test dates in September, October, December, and April, it may take longer for scores to be processed and posted.
